Royal Barges Bangkok

Royal Barges are a major tourist attraction in Bangkok. The grand barge is used as a medium of transport for the members of the royal family of Thailand. On occasions like annual festivals, the royal family can be seen using the barges across river Chao Phraya.

A Bangkok tour can not be complete without having a glimpse of Royal Barges. Tourists can see the barges from 8.30 am to 5 pm every day. Only a fee of 30 Baht are charged from the visitors. The barges are kept in sheds while they are not in use. During the festivals, the procession of barges is a spectacular sight. About 25 boats take part in the processions.

The Royal Barges reflect the fine artistic and aesthetic sense of the heritage of Thailand. The barges are beautifully crafted by the artisans. They are beautifully decorated and each of the barges is decorated with a replica of the mythical figures. Royal Barges are beautifully painted. Glass and mirrors are used to decorate the boats as well.

The largest of the Royal Barges is known as “Suphanahong”. This boat is used by the King of the land. About 50 oarsmen are required to ply this grand barge. For the other Royal Barges, about 40 oarsmen are required.
