Cuiabá in Brazil
The Cuiabá River in the southwestern state of Mato Grosso cuts through two sister cities: Old Cuiabá and Várzea Grande – the state capital. Founded in early 18th century during the gold rush, this fast-growing city is an excellent base for excursions into the Pantanal region – world’s largest wetland – and Chapada dos Guimarães National Park which is known for dramatic cliffs.

The Mato Grosso History Museum (Museu Histórico de Mato Grosso), Museu Rondon in UFMT, and Museu do Morro da Caixa D´Agua Velha are famous places to visit in Cuiabá.
Visit the obelisk at the Geodesic Center of South America (Centro Geodésico da America do Sul) which is allegedly the center of South America. Browse for regional handicrafts, ceramics, woodcarvings, and straw baskets at Casa do Artesão. Near the municipal aquarium, the Mercado do Porto houses a fish and spice market.
Celebrated dearly with traditional dances and regional cuisine, the Festa de São Benedito is held in the first week of July at the Our Lady of the Rosary Church and the Chapel of St. Benedict.
