As Australia shakes off the wintry feeling and rejoices at the sight of spring, it’s time to be a gypsy at heart. Australia can be rugged, mystical, and downright wild. It’s for you to try every facet of this continent, more so because you have warm sun and blue sky for company. If kayaking, surfing, and diving seem hackneyed, go for a fishing holiday in Darwin, wine tour around Margaret River, trekking at Daintree Rainforest, and wildlife spotting at Kangaroo Island. Watching your favorite stallion win the Melbourne Cup and walking amidst millions of flowers in Canberra are also far from usual experiences.
#1. Northern Territory
The pre-monsoon build-up is what pulls travelers to Northern Territory. The fluttering trees and dark clouds above create a dramatic setting that’s ideal for a fishing tour. The stage is set to explore the fishing hot spots around Darwin Harbor or go angling in the Daly River.

Kakadu National Park, a World Heritage Site, is the best place to discover aboriginal rock art paintings and the sunrise and sunset cruises through Yellow Waters are a source of great joy.
#2. Daintree Rainforest
There’s never a dull moment in the world’s oldest tropical rainforest. A two-hour drive from Cairns takes you to this World Heritage Site in Queensland that gets its mojo back with the arrival of spring. Apart from spending time at the calm beaches and admiring the orchids in full bloom, you always have the choir of migratory birds to keep you entertained.
#3. Whitsunday Islands
Traveling few hundred kilometers southeast of the Daintree Rainforest takes you to Whitsunday Islands – a group of 74 islands. Walking over the white sands of Whitehaven Beach or bushwalking through the national park in the South Molle Island are one of the many happy distractions for a visitor. While sailing, swimming, snorkeling, and diving are best experienced at Hamilton Island, a true luxury destination is better sought in Hayman Island.
#4. Floriade
Considered the biggest celebration of spring in Australia, the Floriade festival in Canberra is where millions of tulips “toss their heads in sprightly dance.” The month-long fiesta (Sep 12 – Oct 11) is the best time to get a first-hand experience of Canberra’s cultural richness. Watch floral fashion designs during the day and witness the place come alive after dark as the NightFest comes packed with light shows, live jig, and some magical performances.
#5. Melbourne Cup Carnival
If you travel down south and find yourself in New South Wales, make it a point to attend the Melbourne Cup Carnival. The week-long horse racing carnival (Oct 31– Nov 7) is the time to rub shoulders with the who’s who of the city and be seen among the gorgeous horses and international jockeys. The excitement in the atmosphere complements the thrill in your heart as you sip champagne and watch the sinewy stallions stretching themselves to the fullest to win the crown.
#6. Kangaroo Island
The Kangaroo Island is the blue-eyed boy of every traveler. Every spring, the place paints itself in so many hues that you can’t fix your eyes on one place for too long. While colorful wildflowers meet you around the walking trails at Hanson Bay, the migratory birds in Cape Gantheaume Conservation Park steal your attention with their fleeting presence. It’s also a priceless moment when you find dolphins at their acrobatic best at Cape Borda. The energy of the place is contagious.
