While it may not compare to the large collection at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, the Luxor Museum of Ancient Egyptian Art still boasts an impressive collection of artifacts dating from the Predynastic Period through to the Islamic era.
Highlights include objects from Tutankhamun’s tomb such as furniture and jewellery. There’s also a reconstructed wall from a temple constructed by Amenhotep IV. The sandstone blocks were discovered when a pylon at Karnak Temple was taken apart for reconstruction work. Can you believe the blocks had been used to fill the pylon! Across the world, individual blocks can be found on display but the Luxor Museum is the only place where an entire wall has successfully been recreated.
Like the museum in Cairo, there’s also a section dedicated to the art of mummification. Though perhaps a bit morbid, it offers a fascinating glimpse into this sacred process. Along with mummy cases, the museum in Luxor also includes mummified crocodiles.
