If it is 11.50 am in New Delhi, the time in California is 11.20 pm, 2.20 pm in New York, 8.20 am in Berlin, 3.20 pm in Tokyo, 2.20 pm in China, 4.20 pm in Sydney, and 7.20 am in London.
This time differential may raise some questions in your mind. To understand it in a more appropriate way, here are some basic and general information about world time and date:
The world map has been split into 24 time zones. Each time zone is exactly 1 hour apart from the other. As per convention, local time is calculated with respect to UTC or GMT, which is considered 0 degrees. Due to Daylight Saving Time (DST), these offsets vary twice a year. This has been done for more convenience in world cooperation. With more globalization, this concept is becoming more useful. Specific rules referring to longitude are obeyed by the time zones.
GMT stands for Greenwich Mean Time. To know the time zone of other countries and different places around the world, GMT+0 is the first step. For providing a more accurate timekeeping system, the concept of UTC, which stands for Coordinated Universal Time, was devised later. Currently, UTC has replaced GMT for universal time synchronization as a more accurate time standard.
- Daylight Saving Time (DST)
It was Benjamin Franklin who first proposed the concept of Daylight Saving Time (DST). This concept enhances the duration of daytime by 1 hour to advance the standard time within the region or zone. Usually, the clock is adjusted forward and backward by 1 hour in spring and autumn respectively.
- If a particular location observes UTC+3 during standard time, it will observe UTC+4 during springtime, owing to Daylight Saving Time.
- If a particular location observes UTC-6 during standard time, it will observe UTC-5 during springtime, owing to Daylight Saving Time.
To avoid weekday schedule disruption, the clock shift from standard time to DST or vice versa is done during weekends instead of weekdays.
While AM stands for Ante Meridiem, PM stands for Post Meridiem. According to this time format, 24 hours in a day is divided into two equal cycles of 12 hours each. While AM is before the middle of the day, PM is after the middle of the day.
