The City of Dahlonega is the county seat of Lumpkin County, Georgia, USA. Located at the foothills of the Northeast Georgia Mountains, approximately 70 miles north east of Atlanta, it was the site of the first major gold rush in the United States. The city was incorporated on December 21, 1833. Between 1838 and 1861, the US Branch Mint located here, minted Half Eagle, Quarter Eagle, the Gold Dollar and the Three Dollar Gold. In 1873 this abandoned Dahlonega Mint Building became the site for the establishment of the North Georgia College and State University. It was the first state-supported college in Georgia to grant a degree to a woman and is now one of the 6 senior military colleges in the USA.
The City Council composed of a Mayor and six Council members is the chief governing body of the city. The City Council appoints a City Manager to supervise and coordinate the activities of all the departments of the city and implement the policies of the City Council.
One should visit the Dahlonega Gold Museum Historic Site housed in the 1836 built Lumpkin County Courthouse located in the middle of the town square. Dahlonega's commercial district, including the public square, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Major wineries have set up base in the rich and fertile hillsides of Lumpkin County. The city has also evolved into a center for the performing and visual arts in the North Georgia Mountains.
