Where did the British Royals spend their Honeymoon?

The forthcoming marriage between Prince Harry (Prince Henry of Wales) and Meghan Markel has drawn the world’s attention, and the big question everyone is asking, where is the royal couple heading for their honeymoon?

What many are not aware, there is another royal wedding coming up a few months later between Princess Eugenie of York and Jack Brooksbank.

The royal honeymoon destinations have always raised people’s interest, and so, we present the favorite destinations of the British Royal Family.

Favorite honeymoon destinations of the British Royal Family

Prince Albert Duke of York (later King George VI) and Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (Queen Mother)

Location: Great Bookham, Surrey
Place of stay: Polesden Lacey

Prince Albert, later King George VI, married Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (Queen Mother) on April 26th, 1923, at the Westminster Abbey, London. The royal couple left to spend their honeymoon at Great Bookham in Surrey where they stayed at Polesden Lacey, an English Manor House. They later left for Scotland, but the Queen Mother developed whooping cough and was forced to cut short her trip.

Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh

Princess Elizabeth and Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh were married on November 20th, 1947, at the Westminster Abbey, London. The World War II had put the British economy under stress, and the post-war reconstruction of Europe was underway. India, the largest and most profitable colony of the British Empire had won its freedom the same year in August. Under these circumstances, the royal couple decided to spend their honeymoon closer home.

For the first phase of their honeymoon, the royal couple headed to Broadlands House in Hampshire, owned by Earl Mountbatten and Philips’ uncle before proceeding to Scotland for the second phase of the royal honeymoon.

Broadlands House is a beautiful English Country Manor with beautiful sprawling gardens. Later, in 1981, Princess Diana and Prince Charles chose to spend their first three days of their honeymoon at Broadlands House, just as the Prince’s parents did in 1947.

Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh later moved from Broadlands House to Birkhall in Scotland where Queen Elizabeth II had spent many summers during her growing years with her mother, Queen Elizabeth.

Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon and Antony Armstrong-Jones

Location: Caribbean
Place of stay: Mostly on the Royal Yacht Britannia

On May 6th, 1960, Princess Margaret (Queen Elizabeth’s younger sister) married Antony Armstrong-Jones, Earl of Snowdon, at the Westminster Abbey, London. It was the first royal wedding to be covered live on television. They left for a six-week honeymoon to the Caribbean aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia. After returning from the honeymoon, the Royals moved into Kensington Palace.

Prince Charles, Prince of Wales and Diana Spencer (First Marriage)

Prince Charles, the eldest son of Queen Elizabeth II, married Diana Spencer on July 29th, 1981, at the St. Paul’s Cathedral, London. The wedding attracted global attention and widely followed globally.

For the honeymoon, the couple took the Royal British Saloon 975025 Caroline (train) from Waterloo Station to Hampshire where they spent their honeymoon night at the Broadlands House. It was the same venue where Queen Elizabeth II spent the first phase of her honeymoon.

Later, Prince Charles and Diana flew out to Gibraltar to board the Royal Yacht Britannia and set sail around the Mediterranean. They visited Tunisia, Sardinia, Greece, and Egypt. After, traveling the region, the royal couple flew out to Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire, Scotland for the family gathering and last leg of their honeymoon.

Prince Charles, Prince of Wales and Camilla Parker-Bowles (Second Marriage)

Prince Charles’ second marriage was to his old time friend, Camilla Parker-Bowles. They got married on April 9th, 2005, at Windsor Guildhall, Windsor and followed up with a prayer service at St. Georges Chapel, Windsor Castle.

The couple left for Birkhall in Scotland, 35 years after they first met.

Prince Andrew, Duke of York and Sarah Ferguson

Location: The Azores, Portugal
Place: Mostly aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia

Prince Andrew married Sarah Ferguson on July 23rd, 1986, at the Westminster Abbey, London. They set sail for the beautiful Azores, an autonomous archipelago of Portugal. Most of the time was spent aboard the Britannia and traveling around the island.

Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex and Sophie

Location: Aberdeenshire, Scotland
Place of stay: Balmoral Castle

Prince Edward, youngest among the four children of Queen Elizabeth II, married Sophie Rhys-Jones, Countess of Wessex on June 19th, 1999, at the St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. Prince Harry, the younger son of Prince Charles and late Princess Diana, is set to marry Meghan Markel at the same chapel.

Prince Edward and Sophie spent their honeymoon at the Balmoral Castle, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, and Catherine Middleton

Location: Seychelles
Place of stay: North Island

Prince William, the elder of the two sons of Prince Charles and late Princess Diana, wed Catherine (Kate) Middleton on April 29th, 2011, at the Westminster Abbey, London. Prince William is in the second line of succession to the British Throne, after his father, Prince Charles. Like his high profile parents, Prince William and Kate’s wedding drew a lot of attention worldwide.

The honeymoon was delayed by ten days as Prince William returned to carry out search and rescue service for the Royal Navy he served. The royal couple later flew to a secluded private villa on North Island in Seychelles in the Indian Ocean. The couple spent just ten quiet days there as Prince William had to return for duty.

Prince Peter Phillips and Autumn Kelly

Location: South Africa
Place of stay: Tuningi Safari Lodge, Madikwe Game Reserve

Prince Peter Mark Andrew Phillips, the elder of two children of Princess Anne and husband Captain Mark Philips, wed Autumn Kelly on May 17th, 2008, at the St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, Berkshire.

The couple left for Tuningi Safari Lodge in South Africa but got embroiled in a controversy for allegedly receiving payment in return for promoting the resort.

Zara Anne Elizabeth Phillips and Mike Tindall

Location: Limassol, Cyprus
Place of stay: Columbia Beach Resort

Zara Anne Elizabeth Phillips, younger sister of Prince Peter Phillips, married Mike Tindall on July 30th, 2011, at Canongate Kirk, Edinburgh, Scotland.

They had to delay their honeymoon by three weeks due to commitments with their respective sporting careers. Zara was an equestrian and Mike, a Rugby player. They later flew out to Limassol in Cyprus for the much-awaited honeymoon. Zara Tindall does not use the royal title.

Prince Harry Charles Albert David, Prince Henry of Wales, and Meghan Markle

Prince Harry, the younger son of Prince Charles and Late Lady Diana, is set to marry Meghan Markel on May 19th, 2018.
