All you can do is heap curses on the airport management for their inefficiency. But, there are quite a few airports in the world which are renowned for their punctuality. The United States dominates, as five of its airports ranked among the top ten.
The Criteria for Qualification
The OAG follows a stringent qualification process. The OAG defines the on-time performance as the flights that either arrive or depart in 15 minutes of their scheduled time of departure/arrival. It also includes the cancellations. The higher the OTP percentage, the more punctual that airport is.
Here are the top ten mega airports in the world that ranked high in terms of punctuality, as per the OAG’s Latest On-Time Performance Star Ratings.
Tokyo Haneda is the world’s most punctual airport. Located in Tokyo, Japan, the airport had an annual On-Time Performance (OTP) of 85.62 per cent for the year 2018. In 2017, the airport handled a whopping 85,408,975 passengers, which made it the world’s fourth-busiest airport. It is a hub for leading airlines such as Japan Airlines, All Nippon Airways, Skymark Airlines, Air Do, etc.
The second most punctual airport, Atlanta Airport, is located in the US state of Georgia. Since the 2000s, Atlanta has been the busiest airport in the world by passenger traffic. It is the hub of Delta Air Lines and is the focus city for Frontier Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and Spirit Airlines. As of 2018, it had an OTP of 82.23 per cent.
Singapore Changi is not just the third most punctual airport in the world, but as per Skytrax, it is also the best. Boasting of superior facilities, the airport is the home base for Singapore Airlines, Singapore Airlines Cargo, Jetstar Asia Airways, Scoot, etc. One of the busiest airports, it is also Southeast Asia’s largest transportation hubs. Singapore Changi’s OTP stood at 80.70 per cent in 2018.
The second-largest airport in the world by total land area and covers an area of 33,531 acres. It is the world’s fourth most punctual airport. In 2018, the airport handled 64,494,613 passengers, which made it the world’s 20th busiest airport. It is the hub for Frontier Airlines and United Airlines. Situated in Denver, Colorado, the airport had an OTP of 80.65 in 2018.
At the fifth place in terms of punctuality is Los Angeles Airport with an OTP of 79.95, as of 2018. It was also the fourth busiest airport in the world handling 87,534,384 passengers. It is a hub for prominent airlines such as Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Airlines and United Airlines.
Located in Madrid, Spain, the Madrid-Bajaras is the sixth most punctual airport in the world and the most punctual in Europe. In the 2018 OAG report, its OTP score was 79.16 per cent. In terms of passenger traffic, it is the sixth busiest airport in Europe. It is the hub for Air Europa and Iberia.
In 2018, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport had an OTP of 78.23 per cent, which made it the seventh most punctual airport in the world. The airport covers an area of 17,207 acres and as of 2017, was the world’s 14th busiest airport. Prominent flights that operate from here are Ameriflight, UPS Airlines, and American Airlines.
The main international airport of the Netherlands, Amsterdam Airport is the eight most punctual airport in the world and 2018 had an OTP of 77.73 per cent. Though the airport started as a military base in 1916, it mostly became a civilian airport by the end of the WWI. In terms of passenger volumes, it is Europe’s third busiest airport. In 2016, around 63,625,664 used the airport.
Suvarnabhumi, which is commonly known as the Bangkok Airport, is a prominent international airport in Thailand. The ninth most punctual, it had an OTP of 77.21 per cent in 2018. Among Southeast Asia’s most famous international airports, Suvarnabhumi Airport covers an area of 3,240 hectares. It is the world’s 21st busiest airport and is a hub for Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways, Jet Asia Airways, among others.
Chicago O’Hare covers all the major continents of the world and is the tenth most punctual airport in the world. In 2018, it had an OTP of 76.67 per cent. The world’s sixth busiest airport, in 2017, it served 79.8 million passengers. It is a hub for prominent airlines such as United Airlines, American Airlines, and Atlas Air.
