Originated in the 15th century Scotland, modern-day golf is a club-and-ball sport in which players use various clubs to hit balls into a series of holes on a course in as few strokes as possible. A golf player has to cope up with a varied terrain, unlike other ball games. This varied terrain is a key feature of the game and a golf course consists of either an 18-hole progression course or a 9-hole progression depending upon the seriousness of the game.
The R&A (an offshoot of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews) and the United States Golf Association (USGA) are the ruling bodies of golf that control all the game related decisions.
The rules of golf limit each player to a maximum of 14 clubs in their bag. Strict rules prohibit sharing of clubs between players and each player has his own set.
