What is the impact of Terrorism around the world?

4.2/5 - (5 votes)

The influence of the ISIS, one of the deadliest terrorist organizations in the world, may be on the wane due to successful military operations launched against it by the United States and its allies. However, that in no way has impacted the global spread of terrorism. Though the impact of terrorism may be severe in some parts of the world, but almost every continent has experienced terror incidents.

To systematically rank the nations according to terrorist activity, the Institute for Economics and Peace releases the Global Terrorism Index. The index has four indicators – total number of terrorist incidents, injuries, fatalities and property damage. Countries have been ranked on a score of 0 to 10. Countries with scores of 10 are the worst affected, while those with 0 the least.

The fifth release of Global Terrorism Index in 2017, indicated that Iraq, Afghanistan, Nigeria, Syria and Pakistan are the five nations which were highly impacted from terrorism in 2016, and they have faced worst affects since year 2013. These five countries put together accounted for some 72 percent of all deaths from terrorism-related incidents.

ISIL affiliated groups in the year 2016, killed more than 2,417 people and the group had its most devastating presence in Iraq and Syria, which faced over 93% of their attacks.

The index has Iraq as the most affected country, with a score of a complete “10”. Afghanistan and Nigeria, which were the second and third most affected nations had scores of 9.4 and 9.09.

Then came Syria, which is also facing crisis for many years, and has a score of 8.62. Pakistan, India, Turkey, Philippines and few other nations also have a score above 7.

Meanwhile, there are countries that were least affected by terrorism and had scores less than 1. Few of these are Qatar, Switzerland, Morocco, United Arab Emirates, Iceland, New Zealand, Singapore, Vietnam among others.

The table below provides information on how nations have scored on the 2017 Global Terrorism Index.
