What are The Five Longest Bridges in The World?

Whenever there are waterways and valleys to be crossed, bridges are built over them. Since the ancient days, bridges have helped shortening the distance between two regions. While some bridges are popular for their ghost myths like the Devil’s Bride, others are known for being quite long.

1. The Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge

China is well known for its technological advancements, and its name in the lists of tallest, most creative, or longest structures – is not an unusual fact. One of its best attractions which marveled the people around the globe was Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge which is the highest glass bridge in the entire world. And China, is also home to the longest bridge – The Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge, which opened in 2011. It is impressively 102 miles long and is located in Jiangsu province. It is only a part of the long rail line connecting the country’s two popular cities – Shanghai and Nanjing.

2. Changhua-Kaohsiung Viaduct

A part of Taiwan High Speed Rail network, Changhua-Kaohsiung Viaduct is the second longest bridge in the world, sustaining a length of 97.8 miles. It spans from Baguashan, Changua County of mainland Taiwan to the Zuoying District of southern Taiwan. Completed in 2007, the bridge is a viaduct built to be earthquake resistant. In case of a catastrophe, the trains can safely stop.

3. Cangde Grand Bridge

Beijing–Shanghai High-Speed Railway is one of the most busiest railway routes in China, and a part of it is built over this 72-mile long Cangde Grand Bridge. Completed in 2010, the construction ensures earthquake resistance. A total of 3092 piers were used to build the third longest bridge in the world.

4. Tianjin Grand Bridge

Looks like Beijing-Shanghai High Speed Railway did not become the world’s longest high-speed line without the extraordinary efforts in the plan. Some of the longest bridges were first constructed to maintain its speed and also ensure its safety. Tianjin Grand Bridge also forms a part of the Beijing-Shanghai High Speed Railway line, and covers a distance of 70.6 miles. It was also built with piers to make it earthquake resistant.

5. Weinan Weihe Grand Bridge

The oldest of them all is the Weinan Weihe Grand Bridge, which stretches 49.5 miles. It was completed back in year 2008, and was the longest bridge in the world that time. It forms a part of Zhengzhou–Xi’an high speed railway, connecting the east central and northwestern cities of China. The bridge crosses the Wei River twice.
