Countries with near Symmetrical Borders

There is no country in the world with perfectly symmetrical borders.

There are, however, a number of countries in the world which may boast of nearly symmetrical borders. Let us take a look at some of these –

  • Australia (Continent – Australia)
  • Ghana (Continent – Africa)
  • Portugal (Continent – Europe)
  • Nepal (Continent – Asia)
  • Bhutan (Continent – Asia)
  • Germany (Continent – Europe)
  • Kosovo (Continent – Europe)

While not a sovereign state, the archipelago of Tristan da Cunha in the South Atlantic Ocean is believed to have the most symmetric shape. The archipelago looks almost like a perfect circle. Tristan is a British overseas territory and is the remotest inhabited group of islands, located at a distance of about 1500 miles from South Africa. The group of volcanic islands was first sighted by Portuguese explorer Tristão da Cunha and was named after him. The main island has about 262 inhabitants and despite being one of the most beautiful island groups, Tristan is struggling to be self-sufficient. Spanning across an area of about 37.8 square miles, the main revenue of these islands come from tourism and potato farming. Tristan can only be reached by a boat ride from South Africa – a ride that may last between 5 days and a week.

While we’re on the topic of symmetrical borders, let us take a look at the 50 states that make up the US. A number of them are nearly rectangular in shape such as North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas, Colorado, and Wyoming. Wyoming and Colorado in particular have borders which are straight lines and are symmetrical. In fact most of the states in the middle of the US are rectangular except for a few jagged edges made up by natural features such as mountains, lakes, and rivers.
