According to the UNESCO data, China had the maximum researchers in the field of science in the year 2012, who were into full-time employment. According to the data, the number of researchers in the country in the year stood at 1,404,017.

The United States, which is reputed for its top class education and research facilities, came at the second spot. According to the data, there were some 1,265,064 researchers working in the science sector in the country in the year 2012. Japan, which had 646,347 researchers working in the science sector in 2012, stood at the third place.

The European nations of Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Spain and Italy; the Asian nation of South Korea; the North American nation of Canada and the Russian Federation, which lies both in Europe and Asia, had more than 100,000 researchers working in the science sector in the year 2012.


According to the 2010 data available for Australia and India, the two nations known for their superior educational systems and research facilities, the total number of researchers working in the science sector stood at 100,414, and 192,819 respectively.

Occupying the bottom slots of the UNESCO data were nations such as Panama, Togo, Guatemala, Kuwait, and a few others, that had less than 1,000 researchers working in the science sector in the year 2012
