World Map depicting Rule of Law Index

The rule of law is defined as the influence of law in the society. It implies that the rule of law is applicable to everybody alike- citizens, lawmakers, law enforcement judges, and officers. The rule of law is considered one of the key dimensions that determine the quality and good governance of a country.

There are various organizations that promote rule of law- The Council of Europe, International Commission of Jurists, United Nations, International Bar Association, World Justice Project, The International Development Law Organization (IDLO), The International Network to Promote the Rule of Law (INPROL).

The World Justice Project Rule of Law Index measures countries’ rule of law performance across eight factors: Constraints on Government Powers, Absence of Corruption, Open Government, Fundamental Rights, Order and Security, Regulatory Enforcement, Civil Justice, and Criminal Justice. The conceptual framework of the Index includes a ninth factor on informal justice that is not included in the Index’s aggregate scores and rankings.

Here is a table representing the 2018 Rule of Law Index by The World Justice Project.
