The United States is one of the richest countries in the world, holding around 33 percent of the world’s total wealth. The country is home to a large number of Fortune 500 companies and also is amongst the nations with the most billionaires. The US alone has more than 500 billionaires. However, the number of billionaires across the various states of the country varies, ranging from more than 100 in a state to as low as none in other states.
Currently, California, which includes the region of ‘Silicon Valley,’ is an economically prosperous state having the largest sub-national economy in the world. Some of the top companies in the world, such as tech giant Apple, Facebook, Alphabet, Disney, Oracle, Google, and others have their bases in the Golden State. California is also home to the largest number of billionaires. According to the Forbes 2016 list, about 124 billionaires were living in California. Some of the well-known billionaires of California who have made a deep impact in the world include Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook; Elon Musk, founder of SpaceX; Larry Ellison of Oracle Corporation; Larry Page, CEO of Alphabet; George Lucas, filmmaker, among others.
At the second spot is the state of New York, which is home to 93 billionaires. One of the original Thirteen Colonies, the state of New York is home to New York City, one of the most prosperous cities in the world and comprising 40 percent of the population of the state. Some famous companies that are based in New York include American Express, Associated Press, Barnes & Noble, Bloomberg, Citigroup, and Thomson Reuters. Some billionaire residents of New York include Michael Bloomberg, Rupert Murdoch, George Soros, to name a few. Texas and Florida had more than 40 billionaires each.
There are a few states which do not have billionaires. These include Alaska, Alabama, Delaware, and North Dakota.
