The US Declaration of Independence was signed on August 2, 1776. On August 1, 1876, a century later, Colorado became the 38th state to join the Union.
Quite naturally, the state is nicknamed the ‘Centennial State.’ Located right at the heart of contiguous US, the state of Colorado is best known for its high elevations and diverse terrain. The state has 53 Fourteeners – mountain peaks measuring over 14,000 feet in altitude. The state is also known for having a record of several ‘high altitude’ features such as:
Coloradans are known for their dedication to fitness and their outdoorsy lifestyle, but it is also the only US state that turned down an Olympics bid (1976 Winter Olympics). And there is much more that Colorado is known for, such as; the world’s largest Rodeo or even the National Western Stock Show is hosted in Denver every January. The very first Rodeo was hosted in Deer Trail in 1869. The state has more microbreweries (per capita) than any other US state. It is also known for Mesa Verde National Park, the Rocky Mountain National Park and Forest, Pike’s Peak, and some of the best skiing in the country.
Colorado is home to four national parks, each of which is distinct and offers its unique features of what makes the state beautiful. Some of the nation’s most remarkable natural landmarks are found within the boundaries of Colorado’s four National Parks and preserves (Rocky Mountain, Mesa Verde, Great Sand Dunes and Black Canyon of the Gunnison national park).
