As per the Theme Index 2017 of AECOM, the Louvre Museum had the most attendance in year 2017. Located in the French capital, 8,100,000 people visited the museum last year. It provides a glimpse into the history and artifacts of the Egyptian and Near Eastern ancient civilizations, treasures dating from the Neolithic to the 6th century, Islamic art, and paintings to name a few. However, thousands of people visit the library to have a look at one of the world’s greatest paintings ‘Mona Lisa’, which is one of the museum’s prized collections.
Located in Beijing, the National Museum of China was the second most visited museum. It recorded a visitor turnout of 8,063,000 people. Established in 2003, the visitors can get a rare insight into the history of the Yuanmou Man who lived some 1.7 million years ago to relatively recent one of the Qing Dynasty.
The United States of America is not left behind. Tied at the third spot were the two prestigious museums of USA – National Air and Space Museum, located in Washington DC and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, located in New York. Each witnessed an attendance of 7,000,000 in the year 2017.
There is a significant 5.9% growth in attendance in the Vatican Museums of Vatican city, since the year 2016. Around 6,427,000 people paid a visit there, making it the fifth most visited museum of the year. Established in 1506, the Vatican museums provide visitors a glance of an amazing collection of works that have been built up and collected by various popes through the ages.
Numerous other museums of USA, London and China, have made it to the top 20 most visited list. However, it is the museums in Asia which have shown the fastest growth rate, with around 11% rise in total attendance every year. 7 out of top 20 museums are located in the Asian nation of China. As the leaders in innovative infrastructure will emerge, there will be more shifts in the index, but tourism industry will continue to boom around the world.
