Diamonds are one of the supreme gemstones that exist on earth. They symbolize perfection, beauty, and uniqueness, and hold a worldwide representation of fidelity, love, purity, and innocence. Ever heard diamonds being called kings of all crystals, stones of the mind, and gemstones of the masters?
Well, they are indeed considered as the most powerful of all gemstone, for they are known to have healing properties. With the help of diamonds, crystal healing therapies take place. Many theories suggest that diamonds can cleanse your aura and bring positivity into your minds.
At their perfection, diamonds are colorless, but due to the presence of numerous foreign atoms like nitrogen, they tend to sustain a range of colors. White, black, pale pink, yellow, red, orange, green, blue, and brown diamonds are found when one of the atoms is not carbon. For example, a diamond could be blue due to the presence of a single atom of boron.
When celebrating some of the special moments of life, diamonds are catching the eyes of people more than ever.
A diamond doesn’t reach a retail shop that easily. The procedure begins with mining, rough trading, manufacturing, jeweler setting, and then, the precious stones arrive at the retail shops. Few countries have an abundance of natural resources and raw materials like diamonds. After the process of mining, these materials are exported to countries that have widespread and high-tech manufacturing centers. Similarly, after mining, the diamonds undertake a long journey before they reach the consumer.
The value of diamonds bought by all importing countries has dipped about -10.4% since 2015. There was a decrease in imported diamonds by -19.7% from 2018 to 2019.
Asian countries are on the top of the list in importing diamonds in 2019, purchasing 64.2 billion or 61.2% of the global total. India was the biggest consumer of diamonds in the world at US$22 billion, which is 21% of the total imported diamonds, followed by the US at $20.2 billion, which accounts for 19.2% of the imported diamonds.
Few companies have a global monopoly over the global diamond mining industry: Alrosa from Russia, De Beers from Luxembourg, and British-Australian Rio Tinto. These three accounts for above 60 percent of global diamond mine production worldwide.
Production countries are those where the diamonds are found and then mined. According to the British Geological Survey data, the total production of diamonds in the world in 2018 was 149 million carats. Significant diamond producing nations include Russia, Botswana, Canada, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Australia, and South Africa. Russia is the world leader in terms of diamond production. In 2018, Russia produced 43,161,058 carats of diamonds, with the principal miner being ALROSA. The company accounts for 90% of the nation’s production. The diamonds produced here have different kinds of sizes, colors, and clarities. One of the common features of most of the Russian diamonds is that they have a Crystal shape, having sharp corners and eight faces.
Botswana comes in the second position in terms of world diamond production. It produced 27,373,000 carats diamond in 2018. Botswana was followed by Canada and the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the third and fourth places, respectively. Canada produced 23,239,926 carats, whereas the Democratic Republic of the Congo produced 15,131,210 carats. On fifth and sixth positions were Australia and South Africa, with a production of 14,008,054 and 9,911,460 carats, respectively.
