The Indian subcontinent is spread over a vast area with various countries lying under it such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and Sri Lanka. The region is famous for its long history, variety in the cultures and growth in the economy.

Where is the Indian Subcontinent?

The Indian subcontinent is located in South Asia and it is separated from other areas by natural borders which include the huge Himalayan mountains to the north which keep it apart from Central Asia, the Indian Ocean lying to the south provides a long coastline acting as another border. Furthermore, it is fortified by the Arabian Sea on the west side and the Bay of Bengal on the east.

India lies under Asia which is the biggest continent when it comes to its size and population. India is in the southern part of Asia, sharing its borders with other countries such as Pakistan, China, Nepal and Bangladesh.

  • The region has some of the world’s famous historical sites such as the Taj Mahal in India, the ancient ruins of Mohenjo-Daro in Pakistan and the old city of Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka.
  • The Indian subcontinent is where a few of the religions were born like Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism. All of these religions originated from here and later, spread all over the world.
  • It offers many beautiful landscapes, from the snowy Himalayan mountains to the green Sundarbans mangrove forests. It also has many different types of wildlife such as the Bengal tiger, Indian rhinoceros, and Asian elephant.
