Mount Kilimanjaro is located in Tanzania, a country in eastern Africa.

Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa. It is 19,341 feet above sea level. A part of the Kilimanjaro National Park, the mountain is quite popular among tourists as it is one of the best climbing destinations in the world. In 1987, Mount Kilimanjaro National Park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mount Kilimanjaro comprises three volcanic cones. These are Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. Among these the highest is Kibo. The highest summit on Kibo’s crater rim is Uhuru Peak, which has a height of 19,341. The second highest is Mawenzi with a height of 16,893 feet and the third is Shira with a height of 13,140 feet. While Shira and Mawenzi are extinct volcanoes and may not erupt again, Kibo is dormant and there is a possibility that it may erupt in the future.

Mount Kilimanjaro is home to a variety of flora and fauna. Animals such as Kilimanjaro shrew and the chameleon are associated with the mountain. Other species are sunbirds, bushbucks, dik-diks, warthogs, and others. Large animals such as elephants and cape buffaloes are found in the forests and the lower parts of the mountains, while zebras and hyenas are seen on the Shira plateau.

The higher reaches of the mountains are covered with glaciers and ice caps. However, global warming has taken its toll, and scientists predict that between 2022 and 2033, the snows of Kilimanjaro are likely to disappear.
