5/5 - (2 votes)

Tourism is a prosperous industry and with the hassle-free travel system, the industry is advancing beyond its scope of recreation. An examination of the tourism industry reveals that it is of paramount importance when it comes to integrating the world and boosting the economic status of the countries.

World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has been providing authentic data on-

  • trends of tourism
  • expenditure on tourism
  • positive and negative impacts of tourism
  • contribution towards economic growth
  • contribution in generating employment opportunities.

The United Nations has designated 2017 the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. It is a driving engine to create employment opportunities in developing as well as developed economies. Over the past ten years, one in five of all jobs created across the world has been in the travel and tourism sector. As per the 2017 analysis, the sector accounts for 10.4% of global GDP and 313 million jobs or 9.9% of total employment. Seeing these figures, the paramount importance of the tourism sector remains the unprecedented choice of countries to boost their economic status.

The direct contribution of Travel & Tourism to GDP reflects the ‘internal’ spending on Travel & Tourism-

  • Total spending within a particular country on Travel & Tourism by residents and non-residents for business and leisure purposes.
  • Government ‘individual’ spending – spending by government on Travel & Tourism services directly linked to visitors. It involves cultural visits to museums etc. or recreational visits to national parks etc.

The following table reflects the direct contribution (in %) of Travel and Tourism industry in the year 2017.
