The world is waking up to the threats of global warming and environmental pollution. Realizing that it is not too late to save the environment, many nations are resorting to the use of alternative and nuclear energy for a cleaner and greener world. Some nations have taken the threat to the environment seriously and have largely resorted to cleaner energies; however, some countries are still taking the situation lightly.
According to the World Bank data, out of the total energy used in 2013, the alternative and nuclear energy stood at just 8.6 percent the world over. This may sound a very dismal figure, but the percentage varied from country to country and region to region. Among the nations, Iceland stood at the top of the list with alternative and nuclear energy accounting for 89.5 percent of the total energy use. Iceland was way ahead of all other nations as Tajikistan came a distant second on the list. As per the data, alternative and nuclear energy in the country accounted for 59.8 percent of the total energy use in 2013, almost 30 percent less than Iceland.
Nations where alternative and nuclear energy accounted for more than 30 percent of the total energy use in 2013 were Sweden, France, Switzerland, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Norway and New Zealand.
The data also revealed that in many nations, the use of alternative and nuclear energy was almost negligible. Bahrain, Oman, Turkmenistan, Kuwait, Libya, Qatar and Saudi Arabia were just a few countries where alternative and nuclear energy accounted for 0 percent of the total energy use in 2013.
When regions were taken into account, the European Union showed a figure of 18.3 percent, while in North America it was 13.3 percent. In North America, the United States posted a figure of just 12 percent, while its neighbor Canada was ahead at 24.3 percent.
The two regions at the bottom were South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa which posted figures of 3.2 percent and 2.7 percent respectively.
