Tashkent is the capital of Uzbekistan. It is also the capital of Tashkent Province. The name Tashkent means “Stone City”. The city, which was the principality of Chach, was formed as an oasis on the Chirchik River.

Muslims took over the city during the 8th century. Khanate of Kokand captured the city in 1809. Later, Tashkent became the capital of the new territory of Russian Turkistan. It turned out to be the capital of the Turkestan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic in April 1918.

In 1930, it became the capital of the Uzbek SSR. The city developed and industrialized in the 1920s and became the fourth largest city in the country at the time of the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Being the capital city, it is often the victim of several terrorists’ attacks right from the time Uzbekistan gained independence.

Location & Population : Located at 41º16′ Latitude North and 69º13′ Longitude East, Tashkent has a population of 2,142,700.

Kukeldash Madrassa, Chorsu Bazaar, Telyashayakh Mosque -the oldest extant Qur’an in the world, Yunus Khan Mausoleum, Palace of Prince Romanov, Fine Arts Museum of Uzbekistan -a major collection of art from the pre-Russian period, Museum of Applied Arts, History Museum -Tashkent’s largest museum, Amir Timur Museum and Navoi Literary Museum that gives a clear picture of the ancient rulers and their customs and traditions. Independence Square (Mustakillik Square) is the main landmark of the city.
