Samarquand Viloyati



Samarquand Viloyati is a province in Uzbekistan. The Samarquand Province is located in the heart of the basin of Zarafshan River. The capital of this province is Samarqand with almost 368,000 inhabitants.

This province is one of the largest and most prominent in Uzbekistan. Tourism flourishes in this region.

Samarquand Viloyati in Uzbekistan is bordered by Tajikstan, Jizzakh Province, Navoiy Province and Qashqadaryo Province. Covering a surface area of about 16,400 sq km, the total population of this province is approximately 2,322,000. Almost 75 % of the population of this province resides in the rural regions. Samarquand Viloyati was founded on January 15, 1938.

Samarkand Viloyati is divided into 16 administrative districts. Some major towns in Samarquand Viloyati include Bulung’ur, Ishtixon, Juma, Kattaqo’rg’on, Urgut, and Oqtosh. The climate of this province is typically arid continental.

Samarkand is known as the second largest center for economy, culture and science in Uzbekistan, after Tashkent. The Institute of Archeology at the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan is in Samarquand. Some of the UNESCO World Heritage Site claimed architectural monuments are situated in Samarkand, making it the largest center for international tourism in Uzbekistan.

Samarquand Viloyati features significant natural resources. The construction materials like marble, granite, carbonate, limestone and chalk are produced largely here. The major agricultural productions are cotton and cereals, wine manufacturing and seri-culture. Metal processing, ceramics industries, food processing and textiles are some of the most important industrial sectors of Samarquand.

Samarquand Viloyati has a well-developed transport system. There are more than 400 km of railways and 4100 km of track roads. The infrastructure of telecommunication is also well developed.
