East Timor Education



East Timor Education is quite well organized and the government of East Timor has taken the necessary steps to make the educational system strong. In the year 2001 East Timor Education had more than240, 000 primary and secondary students studying in the various schools of the country. The students were being provided education by 6,000 teachers and over 1 million textbooks were supplied to them.

East Timor Education system has gone through a very bad phase during the military regime of the Indonesian troops and more than 90% of the school buildings were destroyed by them. Nowadays education is provided to the students in the national language of Tetum and Portuguese and English are the secondary languages.

The National University of East Timor is an important part of the education system and conducts various classes in the various subjects of political science, economics, education and agriculture.

The rate of literacy in the year 2001 was 48 percent.
