Tanga City Guide



Tanga is the seaport city of Tanzania situated in the most north of it. Tanga is the regional headquarters of the Tanga region. City of Tanga is considered as one of the largest cities in Tanzania.

Tanga Tanzania is a peaceful city in comparison with other cities in Tanzania. This comparison is specially with Arusha and Moshi. Tanga District has 24 wards.

Coffee, tea, sisal and cotton are the main items exported from the Tanga port. The city is not crowded and has excellent sailing options on the Indian Ocean. Enjoying the beach is simply bliss there. It is 185 km north of Dar es Salaam. Travelers from Dar es Salaam can go for a trip to Kenya, Mombasa making a stop-over in the bounty of nature of Tanga. Shopping around main streets and Ngamiani Street is marvelous experience.

Tanga was declared a district office in 1891. Economical development in the city of Tanga was based on sisal. Sisal was brought to the place many years back. The town was set up as the Usambara railway line terminus. This line stretches to Moshi which is situated at the base of Kilimanjaro.

Exotic juices, barbecue, all sorts of beverages, delicious breakfast dishes, chicken and plenty of sea foods attract the tourists to Tanzania here. Tango has a special drink, Healtho, for the youth. This is not found outside this town. Another drink called ‘ Anjari Bottler’s historical drink’ should not be missed by anyone visiting the city of Tanga. When in Tanga, places of attraction on must not miss are Toten Island, Tanga War Graves and Memorials, Amboni Caves, Sulphar Baths, protected coastal mangroves, Raskazoni beach and the daily market in town centre, Tongoni Ruins, Ndumi Village defense works and Mwarongo.
