Though finally conquered by the Arabs who induced the spread of Islam, Tajikistan still retains a lot of Chinese influences.
The term “Tajik”is representative of people who are Iranian by descent and speak Persian. So, “Tajikistan”means ‘land inhabited by the Tajiks’.
Physical Map of Tajikistan
The first and foremost feature of the country of Tajikistan is the fact that it is landlocked. The other most important thing about Tajikistan is that most of its area is covered with mountains. There is the Alay Range in the north and the Pamir Range to the southeast. As a result of the mountains there are also several meandering rivers that traverse the course of the country carving out valleys. There are also many glaciers and lakes to be found to the north of the country. In fact, the highest point of the country, which doubles as the largest glacier outside the Polar Regions, is the Fedchenko Glacier. The lowest point in the country is the southwest of the country and is called the Fergana Valley. The other valleys of importance are the Kofarnihon Valley and the Vakhsh Valley. The most important rivers in the country emanating from the mountains are the Syr Darya, Amu Darya/ Panj, Vakhsh/ Surkhob, Pamir and Bartang.
Location of Tajikistan
Tajikistan is a land locked land mass located in the middle of the continent of Asia, which is better known by the name of ‘Middle East’. Portions of the country of Tajikistan fall both in the northern hemisphere and the eastern hemisphere. The immediate neighbors of Tajikistan is China in the east; Afghanistan in the south, Uzbekistan in the west and Kyrgyzstan in the north.
Climate of Tajikistan
due to the mountainous terrain, climatic conditions in Tajikistan are entirely dependent on the altitude. So, the country as a whole has sub-tropical to arid climatic conditions. While the low lying terrain in the south west of the country sports a sub-tropical climate, higher up it is arid and dry. Also, at higher altitudes summers are mild and pleasant while winters are freezing. Rainfall in Tajikistan is temperate, but decreases with altitude. The highest precipitation is received by the Fedchenko Glacier to the east of Tajikistan.
Flora and Fauna of Tajikistan
Being mostly mountainous, the Flora and fauna of Tajikistan are also dominantly that found in mountainous regions. Exotic fruits and flowers are to be found in abundance throughout the country. Apricots, apples and grapes are some of the fruits to be found in abundance. Flowers in Tajikistan chiefly comprise of wildflowers draping vast expanses of the hillsides. The animal and other fauna found in Tajikistan form a long inventory. They are the Marco Polo sheep, snow leopards, yak, marmot, muskrat, fox, badger, wolf, argali, urical muflon, Siberian ibex, screw-horned goat, Bukhara red deer and also the tiger.
People of Tajikistan
apart from Tajiks, who are Iranian-Persians and make up the maximum populace of the country, there are other races like the Uzbeks, the Russians, the Kyrgyz, the Mongols and the Turks. Through centuries of living together, there has resulted in a commingling in the original people who immigrated from the east of Iran.
Arts, Culture and Music of Tajikistan
- Art : the making of golden embroidery, weaving of colorful textiles, and hand made fun toys are the chief forms of art in Tajikistan.
- Culture : the culture of Tajikistan originally stems from Iranian or, more specifically, Persian culture. However, subsequent historical events have left a noticeable impact on the current practices of the Tajiks. In fact, a lot of Chinese influences prevailed despite the later Arab conquest of the land. Russian practices too have integrated into the Tajik culture.
- Music : like the music of Uzbekistan, Tajikistan’s classical music too is ruled by the “Shashmaqam”or the ‘six maqams’. There are also other Middle East influences to be found in the music of Tajikistan. The southern region of the country has a special kind of celebratory music called the “Falak”. The folk music of Tajikistan, however, falls under three genres. These are the Pamir, Central Kuhistoni and northern Sogdiana. Another type of tajik music is the “Gurugli”which is a heroic epic narrative in content. The chief musical instrument of Tajikistan is the lute.
Flag of Tajikistan
the colors in the current flag of Tajikistan are carryovers from those present in the Soviet era flag. The three colors that dominate the flag are red, white and green (top to bottom). The colors appear in three horizontal stripes, with the white stripe being slightly broader than the red and the green. This white stripe also contains a golden crown haloed by seven golden five-pointed stars. Red is borrowed from the flag of Russia; green stands for the agricultural potential of the land and white for its cotton. The crown and the stars symbolize its independence.
Economy of Tajikistan
the economy of Tajikistan subsists on the revenues earned equally from its various but limited resources. There is no single dominant industry in the country that forms the corner stone. Cotton is the chief crop grown in and exported from the country. The other agricultural produces includes grain, fruits, grapes and vegetables. There are plenty of natural resources in Tajikistan, but they are all found in restricted quantities; they are tungsten, petroleum, uranium, mercury, lead, brown coal, zinc, silver, gold and antimony. Hydropower is another such resource. Revenues are also derived from the export of commodities such as aluminum, cement, electricity, chemicals, cotton, fertilizers, fruits, textiles and vegetable oil.
