Formerly known as the South American Football Championship, Copa America is a men’s international football tournament contested between national teams of CONMEBOL. As the oldest international continental football competition, Copa America has its existing format created in 1993.

This all-new tournament format includes 12 teams competing at different venues in a host nation for a period of one month. From 1993 to 2015, five teams from CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football) and one team from AFC (Asian Football Confederation) have participated in Copa America football tournament. Yet another thing that needs to be noted about Copa America is that it has witnessed a whopping nine appearances by Mexico (CONCACAF) for a non-CONMEBOL team. Out of a total of 44 tournaments, eight of the ten CONMEBOL national teams have been successful in winning the title. Only Ecuador and Venezuela haven’t won the title till date. Moreover, Uruguay has won the title 15 times with Chile being the current champion. At the end of the Copa America football tournament, two trophies are being awarded. The Copa America Trophy is being awarded to the winner while the Copa Bolivia is given to the runner-up. The former trophy has been donated to CONMEBOL by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Argentina in 1916.
