Cricket World Cup 1983 the third world cup was hosted by England. It was the third consecutive time that England became a host to the World Cup tournament. Eight teams participated in the tournament in which 27 matches were played. The matches consisted of 60 overs each.
The main venues of the tournament were Kensington Oval Stadium, St Helen’s stadium at Swansea, Trent Bridge in Nottingham, Old Trafford Cricket Ground, County Ground in Taunton, Edgbaston at Birmingham, Headingley Cricket Ground in Leeds, The County Ground at Southampton, County Ground in Derby, Nevill Ground at Tunbridge Wells and County Ground in Chelmsford.
A few changes were made in the tournament. A fielding circle, which is about 30 yards away from the circle, was introduced. It was made necessary that 4 fieldsmen should stand inside at all times.
The tournament bid adieu to many players and also welcomed many new players. It was the final game for the Australian players Dennis Lillee, Jeff Thomson and Rodney Marsh. It was also the debut match of New Zealand’s Glenn Turner and West Indies’ Clive Hubert Lloyd.
A number of records were set in the Cricket World Cup 1983. David Gower of England scored 384 runs and set a record for the highest run-scorer. Indian wicket keeper RMH Binny took 18 wickets and became the player to take the most number of wickets. Indian player N Kapil Dev took 7 catches and set a record for the most catches.
The final match between India and West Indies witnessed the thrilling 43 runs victory for India.
