- Design: The South Sudanese Flag consists of three horizontal stripes- the top stripe is black, the middle is red and the bottom is green. On the left side of the flag there is a horizontal blue triangle pointing toward the middle with a golden star in the center.
- The flag bears similarities in color to the Flag of Kenya, and in shape to the Flag of Sudan.
- Colors: The Flag reflects the Pan-Arab colors (white, red, green and black) and also blue and golden. The colors symbolize harmony and peace in the Arab world. Also these colors are traditionally associated with inhabitants of the Arab world and Islamic faith for hundreds of years.
- Symbolism: Black represents the South Sudanese people; White represents peace, harmony, brightness and hope; Red stands for the blood shed for freedom; Green symbolizes Islam, the growth of territory, and cultivation; Blue represents the waters of the Nile and the golden star called the Star of Bethlehem in the triangle, stands for unity of the states of South Sudan.
History of South Sudan Flag
The flag of South Sudan was adopted on July 9, 2005 by the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement. The SPML was a political wing that fought the Second Sudanese Civil War against the Sudanese government from 1983 to 2005, and has been influential in the creation of a sovereign State of South Sudan. The SPLM proposed ‘Republic of South Sudan’ as the name of the new state; ‘South Sudan Pound’ as its currency; and the current flag of the Government of South Sudan (GOSS) as its official flag.
