In Slovenia, education is given great significance, as education is the cornerstone of a society based on knowledge. The Constitution of Slovenia prescribes the rules and regulations pertaining to the educational system of Slovenia.
The government of Slovenia has participated in a number of educational programs of the European Union.
The Constitution provides that education in Slovenia, is the responsibility of the State. Furthermore, the Constitution assures free education to all the citizens of the country. Even the minority communities of Slovenia are entitled to receive education delivered in their mother tongues. Government expenses on Slovenia education amounts to almost six percent of the GDP. Slovenia education institutions comprises of schools, professional colleges, faculties, universities and art schools.
Slovenia education can be divided into various levels. The first level is the pre schooling stage. This is followed by primary education and lower secondary level. These two together constitute the level of basic education. The third education level consists of secondary education, which includes both general studies and vocation studies. The next realm is that of vocational training of a higher grade. Finally, there is the level of higher education in Slovenia, featuring both university education of academic orientation and professional orientation.
The Slovenia education system also includes adult education, educational programs catering to particular needs and music and dance educational programs.
