Baia Mare



Baia Mare is a significant city in Romania. This city is located on the northern fringes of Romania. Baia Mare city belongs to the county of Maramures. The city has an altitude of 220 meters and an area of 233 square kilometers.

The first settlement of Baia Mare dates back to the year 1142 when it was settled with the Transylvanian Saxons King Geza II of Hungary.

In the years 1919 and 1920 to 1940, the city of Baia Mare was a part of the Romanian Kingdom. From the years 1952 to 1960 the city was included in the Baia Mare region and finally from the year1968 the city is an essential part of Maramures County.

The economy of Baia Mare is mainly dependent upon the mining works which is situated in the surrounding areas. At present, the financial picture of the city is very satisfying and there has been the development of the place, new malls and supermarkets are there in the city.

The population of Baia Mare is estimated to be 140,937. The geographical limits of Baia Mare are 47 degrees 43 minutes N and 23 degrees 20 minutes E. There are many hotels in Baia Mare like Mara, Euro, Carapti, and Maramures and also the place is a popular tourist destination.

The city of Baia Mare is situated in the vicinity of the Gutai and Ignis Mountains. Mountains encircle the city from all sides and thus the climate of the place remains milder than the rest of the surrounding area.
