Qatar covers an area of 11,437 square kilometers on a peninsula that roughly stretches 160 kilometers north into the Persian Gulf from the Arabian Peninsula. The history of Qatar depicts that it was ruled by Bahrain from the 1700’s to the middle of the 1800’s. From 1916 to 1971 Qatar remained under the control of the British rulers. During the 1980’s and the 1990’s Qatar got involved with disputes between Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. The most prominent ruling dynasty of Qatar was the Al Thani dynasty.
