Most Windy City in the World

Chicago (IL, USA) is also known as the Windy City. Yes, it can be very windy in Chicago, but Chicago is not the most windy city in the world. Wind speed/velocity experts broadly agree that Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand, is the most windy city in the world. Wind speed is measured in kilometers per hour or miles per hour or knots per hour. It is the speed at which wind travels from point A to point B. Wind speed directly affects aviation, maritime and construction activities. Wellington is regarded as the most windy city in the world, on the basis of highest average wind speed throughout the year. There are cities which at time can have winds at several times higher speed than the average at Wellington, but such instances are more of an aberration than trend. The primary reason for Wellington being so windy is its location: Wellington lies between the Cook Strait and the Rimutaka Range on the southwestern tip of New Zealand’s North Island territory. Wind speed, the world over, is measured using an anemometer. Wellington has an average wind speed of 15 knots (17.3 mph or 27.8 kph), whereas the “Windy City” of Chicago has an average of 10.3 mph.
