Overview

Denver International Airport is the fifth busiest airport in the United States, and the largest airport by land area.

In fact, the top four busiest airports could fit inside Denver International’s property – 53 square miles in Denver, Colorado.  Denver International is the only major airport in the United States to have been built within the last twenty-five years, first opening on February 28, 1995. The construction of Denver International Airport has been surrounded by controversy and conspiracy theories. Questions have arisen about the extremely large capacity of the airport, as well as its underground structures and high-tech speedy fuel system, which have caused some theorists to wonder if there is more than meets the eye at this airport. The works of art commissioned for the airport have also drawn some concern and in-depth analysis, and the possibility of a New World Order forming have been floating around.

Nonetheless, Denver International Airport has expanded in size and traffic, rising to the number five spot on the list of busiest airports in the United States. Frontier Airlines has its largest hub at Denver International, as does Great Lakes Airlines. United Airlines has its fourth largest hub at DEN, and Southwest uses Denver International as a hub as well. Denver’s central location to the United States makes it the perfect location for domestic flights. The airports large size has enabled it to take more traffic, with six runways designed for efficiency.

Airport Services

Wi-Fi and Technology: Free Wi-Fi is provided at DEN 24 hours a day throughout the airport. Denver International also has ZooX Public Internet Kiosks situated around the airport. For a fee, travelers can use the computers to play games or use the internet in a comfortable seating area.

Shopping and Dining: Travelers can pick up a Denver souvenir from one of the gift shops or Colorado jewelery stores. Thirsty travelers can sample some Colorado brews from a local brewery, or grab a bite to eat from the Denver ChopHouse, featuring local steaks.

Extras: Denver International is certainly a unique airport, with plenty to check out, like the murals, sculptures and monuments located inside and outside the airport. The first phase of art contains 30 pieces in all from a variety of artists. Many travelers may enjoy checking out the time capsule buried beneath the floor of the airport.

The architecture of the DEN a sight to see, featuring the iconic Jeppesen Terminal roof, with tents that mimic the Colorado skyline – the Rocky Mountains covered in snow. A pedestrian bridge that passes directly over a plane taxiing route allows passengers to check out the peaceful and educational view.

 

Ground Transportation

Several transportation options are available to passengers arriving at Denver International. Limos, taxis, charter buses, and commuter shuttles and hotel shuttles can all be taken directly from the airport, and information is available about these services at the Ground Transportation Information Center on Level 5 of the Jeppesen Terminal.

SkyRide is an airport express bus service that departs frequently with several stops throughout the Regional Transportation District. Prices range from $9-13.

Twelve rental car companies provide service to Denver International Airport passengers. None of these companies have on-airport offices, but they each provide free shuttle service from the airport to their locations.
