Like any Central American country, Nicaragua witnesses two distinct seasons – dry and rainy. An initial study of the climate of Nicaragua reveals that the dry season is experienced between January and June when rainfall seems elusive. The summer sets in by March with April and May considered the hottest months.
The tropical climate of Nicaragua does not witness significant variations in temperatures. While the temperatures in the lowlands vary between 22°C and 30°C, central Nicaragua experiences a cooler climate and temperatures 5°C lower. The mountains are cooler by 10°C. This variation is more because of elevation rather than the seasons. Entire Nicaragua experiences warm and humid climate, except the central highlands.
With the onset of monsoon in June, Nicaragua receives moderate to heavy rainfall. The months between August and September receive tropical downpour every day. Rainfall varies greatly in Nicaragua. The Caribbean lowlands in the east receive heavy rain (between 2,500 and 6,500 mm). It is also noted as the wettest region in Central America. Moreover, the coastal areas are vulnerable to tropical storms and hurricanes that hit the country between July and October. The Pacific lowlands and the western slopes of the central highlands receive considerably less rainfall.
