The history of Malta has been quite turbulent which has affected its culture also. Malta gained independence in the middle of the year 1900. A Mediterranean culture rules the island along with shades of British culture.

In short Malta society & culture has different shades.




The ecclesiastical people approached Malta when it was ruled by the British. Hence most of the people in Malta follow Christianity as their religion. People indulge in inter caste marriages also. It is still considered bad to file a divorce or go for an abortion in Malta society. The people of Malta follow the traditional Catholic rules and strictly follow these. The impact of Catholicism is seen in the magnificent churches that are examples of grand architecture.


Malta culture is ruled by art of making beautiful handicrafts. The woolen jumpers and hand blown glass wares of Malta are quite famous and can be picked as gift items by tourists. The folk song and music of Malta is quite famous and sung with the help of different musical instruments. The people of Malta have different songs for different occasions. To commemorate the main folk festival a competition of songs is held every June in Malta.
