Liwonde City Guide



Liwonde is located in the southern region of Malawi. Situated in the Machinga district the city serves as a crossroad link between the four districts namely Balaka, Zomba, Mangochi and Machinga.

This city serves as a rail line to Mozambique and as a point of junction between the two major highways of Malawi. Liwonde city is considered to be the centre of transportation of Malawi.

The city is mostly known for the Liwonde National Park, lying very near to it. The park is reachable by boat and also other vehicles plying from the southern part of the country. The climate of this city is generally hot and the humidity can be felt while you drive from Zomba city. The land is known for the flame trees which are found in many places of Liwonde.

The Liwonde city has a good market where various types of fruits and vegetables are available.

The people of Liwonde can purchase different food products like maize flour, tomato, onion, cabbage, kidney beans, banana, green leaf, cassava, sweet potato, Irish potato, rice. Sugar cane, Eggplant, Okra, Green beans are also available in the market during particular seasons. Processed foods are obtainable from PTC and McConnels.

The hard wood carvings of Malawi are a hot favorite of the tourists. The African curios, three legged chairs and chief chairs are sold outside the town. While driving on the Liwonde roads you may find a number of curio shops. There are many expatriates living in this city.

Most of them are seen roaming between Zomba city and Lilongwe.
