Southern Region, Malawi



The southern region of Malawi includes some of the very important places like Zomba, Blantyre, Mulanje Mountain and the Shire Valley. Located at a distance of 290 kilometers to the south of Lilongwe, Zomba once happened to serve as the capital city of Malawi.

Geographically Zomba is located towards the foothills of the Zomba plateau.

Zomba in the southern region of Malawi is also noted for its buildings that reflect in their design the colonial architectural style. Besides, Zomba market is also known for being one of the liveliest.

Blantyre in Malawi consists of the two communities of Blantyre and Limbe that are connected by a highway of extending 8 kilometers. Blantyre besides being the oldest municipality of the country is the main center of industrial, commercial and communication related activities of the country.

Blantyre is also known for its scenic beauty with mountains and hills. Most of the hills here are dotted with evergreen forests and wild orchids. There is also the presence here of many species of birds and animals. There is also a mountain Conservation Area in Michiru. Blantyre also has a number of historical sites that are worth visiting.

Mulanje Mountain in the Southern Region of Malawi is one place that is much loved for hiking and rock climbing opportunities that it offers. The highest peak found here is the Sapitwa that rises to an altitude of 3002 meters. The waterfalls and steep gorges found here present a spectacular look.

The Shire valley offers people an amazing view of the Rift valley present here. Besides, one gets to find here a large number of crocodiles and hippos.
