Latvia Lithuania

Latvia Lithuania relationship is an important issue as maintenance of political friendliness is a must for ensuring border security between these two neighboring countries. Latvia shares the longest border with Lithuania which lies to the south of the country and hence the Latvia international relationship depends much on the political conduct. All, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia share a common past as all three countries are located adjoining to the Baltic sea. The Latvians and Lithuanians share the same Baltic language and both countries were previously occupied by Russia.

The major issues of foreign relations between Latvia and Lithuania include development in the Schengen area, emigration formalities, participation and cooperation in international organizations, nuclear power projects and development of railways connecting the Baltic countries.

NUCLEAR POWER REALTIONS BETWEEN LATVIA & LITHUANIA

The Ignalina Power Point in Lithuania was earlier under the control of Russia, when it occupied both Latvia and Lithuania. Now that the two Baltic nations are independent and heading for a more mutually beneficial relation, the power station need to be shared and controlled by scientists of both nation. Foreign ministers Artis Pabriks of Latvia and Petras Vaitekunas of Lithuania have decided upon this in the November meeting held in November, 2006, Vilinius, Lithuania.

Border security and cross border cordial relations are necessary for maintaining the mutually beneficial objectives and projects that the foreign ministers have agreed to.
