History of Kiribati



The History of Kiribati is all about the story of the people who reside there. Kiribati was known as Gilbert Islands earlier. The history of Kiribati dates back to near about two thousand to three thousand years.

Kiribati was a thinly populated area till the history of Kiribati was affected by the invasions of the Samoans and Tongans which induced homogeneous cultural elements to the existing race. The influence of the invaders resulted in the emergence of mixed language, tradition and culture. The inter cast and race marriage led to the rise in population in the history of Kiribati.

The people of Kiribati are well known for their hospitality and sense of belonging. They are known as the strugglers for their never say die spirit that help them survive against the frequent bad weather, sea currents and droughts. After being independent, the president has been selected as the head of the Republic of Kiribati island who is selected by the residents of the island. Initially the people of Kiribati were not educated. However, now the situation has improved and some of the men band women hailing from Kiribati go to universities to acquire their degrees.

The Kiribati Islands were visited by the Europeans during the 1800s in large numbers. The visitors to the place included the traders, the merchants and the slave traders. This introduced the island to various fatal diseases brought in by the Europeans. The people of the Kiribati Island came under the subjugation of the Britishers in the year 1892. The place was made a British colony in the year 1916. the island was captured by the Japanese force during the second world war.
