The Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge was originally a group of some 57 lush islands thriving with life. They boasted of a rich diversity of flora and fauna. Even the 41 islands that survives today live up to their reputation. They thrive in animal, fish, bird, plant and also insect life. The Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge was originally set up in 1990. As the name suggests, the River Islands is mainly about the wildlife and animal habitat that it houses – it is a ‘refuge’. The Refuge houses some 130 different species of birds, over 101 species of fish, 500 species of plants and some 40 different species of animals and amphibians.

However, a permission is requires from the Refuge Manager for a tour through the reserve. The Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge aims to protect the reserve and restore what has been lost from it.
