Iceland is s country in northern Europe that lies wedged between the North Atlantic and the Arctic Oceans. Iceland spans a total area of 40,000 square miles and is home to a population of over 376,248 people making it the least densely populated country in Europe. Despite the proximity to the Arctic region, Iceland is a geologically active region with many volcanoes including Mt Helgafell which erupted in 1973 after 7,000 years. Most of the country’s core is made up of a plateau area formed of sand and lava deposits. Much of the country is mountainous and glaciers and glacial rivers crisscross the land.

Most Icelanders, being descendants of the early Norse and Gaelic and celebrate their Norse heritage. Iceland has no standing army. A member of the EEA, EFTA, NATO, and the OECD, the country is known for its excellent public welfare and healthcare systems.
