Hurricane Ida formed in the Caribbean Sea on August 26, 2021, and quickly intensified as it moved northwestward towards the Gulf of Mexico. The storm passed through the Yucatan Channel on August 27, causing flooding and heavy rain in parts of Cuba and the Yucatan Peninsula.

Ida continued to rapidly intensify as it moved towards the Louisiana coast. The storm made landfall near Port Fourchon, Louisiana. After making landfall, Ida continued to move northward. The storm then continued inland, causing flooding and wind damage in the mid-Atlantic and northeastern United States.

Ida was classified as a Category 4 hurricane at landfall, making it one of the strongest storms ever to hit Louisiana.

Damage by Hurricane

The impact of hurricane was significant, with at least 80 fatalities reported and an estimated $50 billion in damage. The storm caused widespread flooding and wind damage in Louisiana, destroying homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure like power lines and water treatment facilities.
