Ian began as a tropical wave formed in the Caribbean on September 23, 2022 and strengthened into a hurricane on September 26. Ian headed north and quickly intensified over the warm waters and emerged in the Gulf of Mexico in the morning of September 27. Ian passed through Pinar del Rio province of Cuba, then headed towards Florida’s western coast. On September 28, Ian made landfall near Cayo Costa in southwestern Florida. Ian then crossed over the Florida peninsula, and headed towards South Carolina. It later dissipated over Virginia late on October 1.

Hurricane Ian was a powerful and destructive storm that reached Category 4 status on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, with maximum sustained winds of 155 miles per hour and minimum wind pressure of 936 mb.

Damage by Ian

Hurricane Ian was a destructive and deadly hurricane that caused significant damage and loss of life along its path. Ian was responsible for at least 160 fatalities, with the majority in Florida 149, 5 in Cuba, 5 in North Carolina and 1 in Virginia.

Ian was one of the costliest hurricanes of the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season, with an estimated $113 billion in damages. The hurricane caused significant disruption to travel and business operations in many areas, and recovery efforts were extensive and ongoing for many months after the storm passed.
