Muhu County



Estonia is a country comprising of several counties and islands. Muhu is one of the islands located in the Baltic Sea. It is also called as Muhumaa by the local people of the area.

After Saare and Hiiumaa, Muhu is the third largest island in Estonia. The island has a long historical background and it is believed that it rose out of the sea. Many civilizations have established their foundations in the Muhu Island of Estonia. There is a rural municipality in Muhu along with some villages.

Muhu has been invaded by several external forces several times in its history. This has brought a mixture of cultures and traditions in the island. The Estonian island has a rich cultural and traditional heritage, which is distinctly evident in the social and cultural life of the people. Science and technology has also developed a lot in this small island in Estonia. The local inhabitants of this Estonian island prefer to call themselves ‘Muhu People’.

The Muhu island is an extremely attractive place, away from the humdrum of modern life. The beautiful cottages, windmills and small fishing villages make the place very charming. There are also few churches and ruins of some forts and buildings in the Muhu Island, Estonia. There are also well carved and beautifully designed tombstones in Muhu. Most of these architectural structures have Pagan symbolisms engraved on them. Apart from man-made architectural structures, nature at its best can be found in the Muhu Island of Estonia. Wide variety of flora and fauna are also found in the Estonian island.
