About city :
The compact urban settlement of Roseau is the capital of Dominica located in the Caribbean between two French islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe. The region where the city stands was originally settled by Amerindians ( native Americans of the United States). When the Europeans arrived in 16th and 17th century, the French set up a small settlement here and named it Roseau after a type of river reeds that grow here. Later, there were a number of conflicts between the French and the British. By the early 19th century, the British had become firmly established here, but the French influence can still be seen clearly in the planning and architecture of the city. Roseau is a compact, noisy and vibrant city with an approximate population of 16,500 (2007).
Geography :
The city of Roseau stands on an alluvial fan ( fan-shaped sediment deposits) that has been formed a thousand years ago by the River Roseau which forms the boundary of the city. It is also a natural harbor and bound by the Caribbean Sea on the other side. The city has an average elevation of 141 ft. The land rises towards the highland of Morne Bruce which offers a panoramic view of the city.
It has a tropical rainforest climate where high temperature is recorded throughout the year. Rainfall is seen all around the year though the months February to April are relatively dry. Hurricanes are not unknown in the region.
How to reach (transport) :
