President of Djibouti



The current president of the Republic of Djibouti is President Ismail Omar Guelleh. He was elected to the post in 1999. Ismail Omar Guelleh is the second President of Djibouti.

The President of Djibouti heads a semi-presidential form of government. The Djibouti president wields considerable power over the Executive branches of the government. The President of Djibouti may influence-but does not have any autocratic control over the African country’s legislative powers. The Djibouti President is democratically elected to the post. He appoints ministers and other government office bearers as his choice. The current president of Djibouti is Ismail Omar Guelleh.

Hassan Gouled Aptidon was the first President of Djibouti. He was Djibouti’s President from the year 1977 to the year 1999. He was succeeded to the post by his nephew-the current President Ismail Omar Guelleh. Ismail Omar Guelleh served as the head of the Djibouti Secret Service in his long career in the Djibouti police force. Guelleh was elected to the post after he won the Djibouti presidential election in 1999. He had the confidence of 74% of the voting population. He was re-elected as president of Djibouti in 2005. The election was a one-sided one-he was without a political opponent and captured 100% of the votes cast.
