The political system followed in Djibouti is the restricted Democratic Practice. The President and legislature is elected on the national level through Djibouti elections. People elect the President as the head of the state for a term of six years. The unicameral or the single branch of legislature is known as the National Assembly here. The legislature comprise of 65 members. These members are elected through multiparty Djibouti elections for a term of five years.
The first multiparty parliamentary election in Djibouti was held in the year 2003, which was led by People’s Rally for Progress party or the RPP. Djibouti is mainly dominated by one party named People’s Rally for Progress party. Opposition Parties are there, but they do not have much opportunity to gain power.
The electoral system prevalent in Djibouti is Two Round or Run�Off. The election takes place in two rounds within a span of a week or a fortnight. If a candidate receives majority of votes in the first round then the second round is not conducted. If the candidate fails to receive an absolute majority then the second round has to be conducted.
During the last Presidential election of Djibouti held in the year 2005, Ismail Omar Guelleh was re-elected as the president of Djibouti after 1999. Idriss Arnaoud Ali is the current President of the National Assembly. A fair election procedure is practiced in Djibouti.
