Djibouti is a country located in East Africa; it is bordered by Eritrea to the north, Ethiopia to the west and south, and Somalia to the southeast. To the east of the country lies the Gulf of Aden.

The coastal plains, mountain ranges, and volcanic plateaus of the country make a picturesque sight. Some of the most popular destinations of Djibouti are the Presidential Palace, the Central Market, Maskali Island, Moucha Island, Lake Abhe, and Lake Assal.




The Aquarium Tropical de Djibouti is also worth paying a visit while on a tour to Djibouti. It is supposed to be a haven for the marine treasures of the Red Sea. Beaches of Djibouti are major attractions for visitors, who come to explore this east African country from all over the world. The exotic location of the beaches of Djibouti is highly appealing to the visitors. The vast expanse of the sandy beaches along the sea coast really attracts the visitors to spend an ideal holiday with family and friends.


The quality of sand in the beaches of Djibouti varies from one place to the other. While some beaches have white sand, some have dark while some other consists of volcanic rock features. The beach of Tadjourah has extensive tract of white sandy areas. Beach of Obock on the other hand, consists of dark sand and the Gouber El Kharab beach has rocks of volcanic origin.

Small restaurants are found alongside the beaches, from where tourists can avail variety of snacks. During special occasions, these beaches get overcrowded with tourists enjoying the variety of foods, drinks and beach music.

Lake Abbe is a major tourist attraction in Djibouti. It is an isolated steaming lake surrounded by limestone chimneys and a lunar-esque landscape.


One can also visit the Goda Mountains that rise to a height of 1750meters. The Mountains are a natural oddity and home to the only national park in the country, Foret du Day National Park. The park is a haven for people with a love for adventure; hiking in the place is world-famous.

The Ali Sabieh Region of Djibouti straddles the international border with Ethiopia in its southern part. The Dikhil Region of Djibouti lies to the west. The capital city of the Ali Sabieh Region is the city of Ali Sabieh.


Ali Sabieh has few tourist attractions. Tourism activity in the region is restricted to adventure tourism. The stark barren beauty of the local Djibouti landscape is a treat for people, who visit the place to savor the desert landscape. The bare plains of Petit Bara and Grand Bara are a sight to remember for a long time. Other attractions of the Ali Sabieh Region include the pulsating local markets and its engaging witty traders. Extreme sports lovers may also try their hand at wind surfing in one of the many salt plains located in the vicinity of the area.

Obock

Obock is bordered by the African country of Eritrea in its northern side. The Tadjourah region lies to the south-west border of the Obock Region in Djibouti. The Red Sea and Gulf of Aden lies to the east of the Obock Region. The capital Obock is positioned on the Gulf of Tadjourah shore front. The total population of Obock city is less than 9,000 individuals. The capital city has a functional airstrip. There are regular ferry services to Djibouti city.

The topography of Obock Region includes a number of salt-lakes. The We’ima Wenz river flows through the area. The region gained prominence as the location of the first French colony in east Africa. The French first came to Obock Region in the 19th century. They set up a coal replenishing station for commercial steamships. The development of Djibouti as a major regional port signaled the beginning of the end of Obock as a naval port of importance. Obock gained fame as a base for United States troops in the Gulf region.

Lake Asal

Lake Asal is a water body situated in the Republic of Djibouti in east Africa. Lake Asal in Djibouti is a crater lake located in the central part of the African country.

Lake Asal in Djibouti is situated at the southern border of Tadjoura Region in the African country. The area touches the Dikhil Region of Djibouti. This lake of Djibouti is situated 502 feet below sea level. The crater lake lies in the Afar Depression. The water body is regarded as the lowest surface in the African continent. The lake occupies an area of 54 square kilometers. Lake Asal is encircled by a salt pan. The catchment area of the lake is approximately 900 square kilometers. The economic activity of salt mining is carried in the salt pan region that surrounds the water body.

Lake Asal has the unique characteristic of having the maximum salt component compared to any other water body in the world. The salt concentration in the water is about 34.8%. Research has revealed salt concentration to be almost 39.8% near the bottom of the lake. The principal water sources of the lake are the subsurface springs present in the region. The springs are fed by the Gulf of Tadjoura, which is situated nearby.

Lake Abbe

Lake Abbe is situated in the African country of Djibouti. The lake is located in the central area of the Afar Depression. The volcanic mountain of Dama Ali is nearby.

Lake Abbe of Djibouti is located near the border region of the country adjoining Ethiopia. Lake Abbe is known locally as Lake Abhe Bahd. It is a salt water lake. Lake Abbe is one of six lakes in Djibouti that are connected to each other. The notable lakes that are connected geologically to Lake Abbe include Laitali, Gargori, Afambo, Bario and Gunmare among others. Lake Abbe in Ethiopia is the penultimate point of flow of the Awash river.

Lake Abbe was formed by volcanic activities over a period of time. The Lake is located in the Afar Depression. The water body is present in a triple junction of tectonic plates. Lake Abbe area is at the convergence of the two ridges that form the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea. The two geological formations meet the East African Rift below the surface of Lake Abbe. The area around the Djibouti water body is unique. It is one of the few places on earth where a mid-ocean ridge could be subjected to scientific scrutiny on land.
